Mini Challenge #1

Since there were no final stories for us to appreciate I would like to do something a little different and all in fun to provide some reading material. This is a stand-alone mini competition outside the this session of LFWS. Anyone who wants to write may, even if they were not participating members of this session. Once stories are submitted we'll put up voting and we'll have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner (prizes yet to be determined).

If you have questions please feel free to ask them. The closing date of this mini challenge is Monday, June 27 by 11:59pm EST.

Mod Note

First of all, I would like to apologize to all of you for taking so long to update on what's going on. I wanted to discuss it with Devan first, but she hasn't been online in several days.

I have thought about things for a long time and have decided to go ahead and declare tigerlily0484 the Session 5 Last Fiction Writer Standing. However, I'm going to do something else to make up for the lack of stories, which I will talk about later.

Now, I would like to address rumors that are apparently going around that Devan and I came up with that prompt to specifically favor tigerlily0484. This is not true. First of all, I would like to point out that with the exception of a few people who have been in the fandom for a long time (and this being mostly on Devan's side) we are not friends nor do we know any of the people that sign up for this competition. In fact, out of 18 people that signed up for this session, only 3 of them had participated in the previous session.

I have not been active in the NCIS LJ fandom for almost 2 years. I no longer follow discussions or post anything, with the exception of helping out mama_terra at navy_ncis with campfires. Even then I do not pay attention to the comments. I do not know any of the new people to the fandom. At all. In fact, LFWS is the only thing NCIS that I still really do anymore, with the except of graphics on Tumblr.

I will be honest, and own up and say that we didn't have a final prompt ready. When we did the prompts before the session began neither of us could come up with anything befitting a final prompt. We put it off for a while, thinking that we would have plenty of time to come up with one, since LFWS last year ran until the middle of July. We did not anticipate that it would finish this fast, and as such were unprepared when it finally did roll around.

I was asked last week, by colorguard28, if I could post the prompt earlier then we normally did because she had the wedding of her sister to attend. I said I would, and since I had to be to work at 6:45 until 2:00 on Thursday, I put it up Wednesday night before I went to bed. In fact, that was the first time my computer had been turned on that day and the only reason I turned it on. Not that it has anything to do with the competition but my real life has been stressful the past couple of weeks. My sister lost her horse last Friday and as a result has made herself sick with stress, and with a life threatening medical condition that's not really the best thing for her. So, my life the last two weeks has not been pleasant. I sat at my computer for about 10 minutes trying to think of something that would be good for a final prompt. At the end I decided to do a crossover, not thinking anything of it. I would also like to point out that Session 4's final prompt was also a crossover, and more specifically, a sci-fi crossover, which neither participant had a problem with, that they presented to me. I honestly did not think it would be a big deal. I also threw in three specific things that their story had to include, to make it more unlike a regular prompt.

Before I shut the computer off, I received a comment notification from the post. It was from colorguard28, asking if she could use NCIS: LA as the crossover show. After thinking about it I decided that neither NCIS: LA or JAG would be an acceptable crossover show since all three exist in the same world, which I believe sort of defeats the purpose of a crossover. I was 100% completely unaware of colorguard28's situation with her job and no TV. After replying to her, I shut my computer off and went to bed because it was already past the time I had wanted to go to bed.

In the morning when I checked my email before I went to work and discovered the emails from colorguard28 declaring her withdrawal from the competition and the fact that she had posted about it everywhere, without giving us time to reply to her or change the prompt, which, personally, I find a little unfair. I left Devan a message before I left the house, telling her that when she woke up she needed to check the comm and then IM me from AIM because they would go to my phone.

When she did get up, we spent an hour and a half, me from my phone at work, and her on her computer, trying to to fix it. We thought up of another prompt and Devan posted a mod post. We were then informed by colorguard28 that her withdrawal still stood. At this point Devan and I were at a loss at what to do. Anything we could think of had the downside of causing more problems then it would solve.

I'm also informed that more then a few people have a problem with the way we run the community. All I can say to that is that any problem that we've had presented to us we have tried out best to fix in the most fair way we possibly can. I would also like to point out that if you have a problem with the community, or with me, or with Devan, that talking about it behind our backs will not help anything get solved. We are not psychic, we cannot read people's minds nor do we know how they feel, unless they tell us. Everyone knows the LFWS email, it's not a secret, so if you do have a problem with the community, email us and we will try to work together to solve it in a fair way.

As far as being overly bearing with the way voting is done, we have followed the same format since I took over here and we have never had as many problems with people ignoring the HTML that we provide as we have in this session. We provide the form, HTML included, for people to copy and paste. This is legitimately the first session we've ever had a problem with people not doing it. We even posted an HTML how to for people who may not be familiar with the way HTML works. It's been suggested that we change the format, however, this is the way that it's easiest for us to read and keep track. Tallying for voting can be incredibly difficult sometimes, especially towards the beginning of the session when we have a ton of people. We use the format we do to help make it a little easier for us.

Now, since there were no final stories, I have decided to do something that we've never done before. I'm going to open the 2 prompts, the one being the crossover and the other being the one that Devan and I came up with that has yet to be posted, to anyone who wants to write. It will be sort of a mini challenge. Just for fun. I'll post the rules and such for it in a little bit. Anyone who participated this session is more then welcome to participate in the mini challenge.

Thank you.

Important Modpost - Please Read

This session has been a little rocky to begin with, I realize that. But vamp926 and I try our best to juggle this community with our day to day lives. I hope you realize that if you have any issues with how the comm is run, or with anything, really, you can come to us and we'll work it out with you until we come to a solution. We just want everyone to have a good time - this whole thing is supposed to be fun!

We know that the prompt posted yesterday was very specific. However, prompts for the final round are always harder and more specific than any previous prompts. We also have had crossover prompts in the past (last session, we had a sci-fi crossover prompt for the finale), so we felt that it wouldn't be an issue.

Since it has become an issue, Elizabeth and I have decided to recant the prompt posted yesterday in favor for a new prompt that will be posted soon. We want to end this session on a good note!

So, keep an eye out within the next 20 minutes or so for the new prompt. Remember - if anyone has any issues, email us at the comm email, or PM one of us.

Thank you!

Edit: colorguard28 has just informed us that she is still withdrawing from the competition. An update on everything will be posted later in the day. Thank you for being patient with us. :-)
